No drought in interstate Rugby League had lasted as long as this one.

The Women’s Interstate Challenge, contested between the best 17 female players from NSW and Queensland respectively, had always been a lopsided affair; those north of the border had taken out the Nellie Doherty Cup an incredible 16 times consecutively since it was first contested in 1999, before NSW went agonisingly close with a 4-all draw in 2015. They would have to travel to Queensland again in July, with the Ruan Sims-led side going in confident of causing an upset.

A bruising encounter followed, with Kezie Apps going close to scoring the first try of the match, but ultimately both sides would head into the sheds with no points to their name. Eventually, in the second stanza, Simaima Taufa would cross for a four-pointer following a damaging run, as part of an outstanding individual performance. A NSW penalty goal soon extended their lead and while Queensland scored in the dying minutes, they would run out 8-4 winners in one of the most memorable games of 2016.
