Finals fever is heating up with the first week of play offs seeing matches played across five grounds this weekend – Belmore Sports Ground, Pepper Stadium, Leichhardt Oval, Ringrose Oval and New Era Stadium.
The competition is fierce – just one point in the for-and-against differential separated the minor premiers in the VB NSW Cup, and the competition was also close in the Ron Massey Cup and the Sydney Shield.
The Mounties cemented their dominance in the Ron Massey Cup – finishing eight points clear of the field and earning the club their second minor premiership alongside their VB Cup counterparts, while the Sydney Shield competition saw three teams finish on equal points for second place, with Mounties slipping to fourth spot on for and against.
In the Sydney Shield, Wentworthville were rewarded for their consistent back end to the season – and in a competition that generally provides selection headaches with the constant reshuffling of players within the grades, it was consistency that paid off for Wentworthville.
Week one of the VB NSW Cup finals series will be played on Saturday, with a triple header at Belmore Sports Ground and the Fox TV game at Pepper Stadium, while Sydney Shield and Ron Massey Cup play offs will be staged on Sunday.
