Kotoni Staggs would love to represent NSW in 2020 but realises his first move is to get back on the training track for the Broncos.
Staggs was sensational last year, cementing himself as a dangerous centre in the NRL with 11 tries in 24 appearances.
He represented the Indigenous All Stars and then at the end of the year played for Tonga in their stunning upset of the Australian Kangaroos.
In that match he also picked up a nagging toe injury that has kept him in the Broncos' rehabilitation group in pre-season.
"It has been a couple of months now I have not been back in training, and it has been different and it has been hard," said Staggs.
"You don't want to be in rehab - you want to be on the field touching the ball.
"It has been tough, but I'm getting along with it.
"It is basically just running all the time - two hours of running, so it is not fun at all."
NSW Emerging Origin squad member Staggs is aware the Broncos have plenty of competition in the outside backs.
In addition to Darius Boyd and Jack Bird, there are young guns like Xavier Coates, Jesse Arthars and Herbie Farnworth who can all play in the centres.
"Trials are just around the corner so hopefully I can be fit for those and for round one as well," he said.
"That's my position and I will do everything to keep that spot.
"But there are a lot of boys fighting for that spot.
"I watch them at training and there are some tough players I am competing with.
"I first want to get my spot in the team and play consistent footy.
"I want to represent my State as well.
"That's one thing I am going to go for - growing up that is one thing I wanted to do, to play on that stage."
