Cronulla Caringbah Sharks 44 def Helensburgh Tigers 16
Newcomers Helensburgh Tigers faced the Cronulla Caringbah Sharks at Cronulla High School in the opening round of the Sydney Shield and the home side were too strong, recording a 44-16 win.
Cronulla were helped by former NRL player Michael Lichaa at hooker, who scored in the first half to help his side to an 18-0 lead at half-time.
The home team was also aided by Canterbury Cup NSW mainstay Bronson Garlick at five-eighth and they kept their attacking roll on in the second half, with doubles to Wiremu Peters and Nesiasi Mataitonga.
The away side managed to score some points and close the gap and lock Liam O’Toole scored a consolation try in the dying minutes.
Ryde Eastwood Hawks 36 def Hills District 26
Ryde Eastwood Hawks have won a high-scoring see-sawing affair at TG Milner field with a 36-22 victory over Hills District.
Both wingers for the Hawks scored tries as did front-rower Suli-Ruka barging over for a slightly rarer four-pointer.
Masi Fidow and and Noah Smith were among the five try-scorers for Hills District who went with the Hawks for the whole game but were out-muscled in the end.
