Brydens Lawyers NSW Blues coach Brad Fittler is expecting a full stadium, led by The Star Blatchys Blues fans, when the 2022 Ampol State of Origin series returns to Sydney for the first time in 574 days on 8 June.
Fittler, whose side played all three games of this year’s COVID-impacted series in Queensland, said he can’t wait to return to Stadium Australia for the 2022 series-opener, after playing their last match before a home crowd in Game II on 11 November 2020.
“We have a great record at home and we love playing in front of our fans, especially the Blatchys Blues who are among the most fanatical sports supporters in Australia,” Fittler said.
“It will be so good to see our stadium full again.”
The dates for the 2022 series were officially announced today: Game I, 8 June, Stadium Australia, Sydney; Game II, 26 June, Optus Stadium, Perth; and Game III, 13 July, Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane.
The Ampol Women's State of Origin match will be held on Friday 24 June at a venue yet to be determined.
The return to Perth marks the first State of Origin clash at Optus Stadium since its WA debut for Game II in 2019.
The Brydens Lawyers NSW Blues went on to secure a dominant 38-6 victory over the Maroons, before winning the decider in Sydney.
NSWRL Chief Executive David Trodden said: “We are so excited about Origin kicking off in Sydney next year, but equally as thrilled at the prospect of going back to Perth, where we have very fond memories.”
