Two True Blues and former South Sydney teammates, Adam Reynolds and Cameron Murray, have both been named NRL club captains for the 2022 season.
Not only do they each have that honour, they will oppose each other in Round 1 with Reynolds being named captain of the Brisbane Broncos this week following Murray being handed the job of skipper of the Rabbitohs in December following Reynolds departure.
The Broncos-Rabbitohs clash is set for Friday 11 March at Suncorp Stadium.
“It won’t be weird at all – I’m a Bronco, it’s as simple as that,” said Reynolds, who captained South Sydney in last October NRL Grand Final against Penrith.
“No matter it’s against the old club. I’m well-entrenched with these fellows now, they’re my teammates. I’m looking forward to it.”
Murray now adds to the list of current Brydens Lawyers NSW Blues players, who are club captains.
James Tedesco (Roosters), and Nathan Cleary and Isaah Yeo (Panthers) have now also been joined by Junior Paulo, who was named co-captain at the Eels with True Blue Clint Gutherson.
Murray, like Reynolds, is a South Sydney junior. He follows a blue riband line of players like Clive Churchill, John Sattler, Mario Fenech, John Sutton, Greg Inglis and Reynolds in leading the club.
The 24-year-old Brydens Lawyers NSW Blues backrower made his NRL debut against the Broncos in Round 8 in 2017.
He has previously captained South Sydney’s Harold Matthews Cup and SG Ball Cup sides as well as captaining the NSW U20s at the age of 19 and the NSW U18s.
“It’s hard to find the words on how special it is for me … as a kid growing up in the area and supporting the club my whole life,” Murray said of being named 2022 Rabbitohs captain.
“When you look at some of the names who have captained the club it’s truly an honour to have my name next to theirs. I need to uphold the great work that they’ve done and honour the hard work they’ve done in this jersey.”
Former Test half and Queensland Maroons coach Kevin Walters – now Broncos coach – told why he chose Reynolds, who played for the NSW Blues in 2016.
“He’s well respected within the group and brings that level of confidence among the players,” Walters said this week.
“I’ve been watching him over the years both from a State of Origin point of view and also his career at Souths. In the big moments he knows what to do and that makes him the ideal captain.”
