The Men’s Country Championships and Women’s Country Championships Open Age competitions will kick off tomorrow, with all games this season to be live streamed on NSWRL TV.
The competitions will feature 10 teams from across Regional NSW including North Coast Bulldogs, Northern Rivers Titans, Northern Tigers, Monaro Colts, Riverina Bulls, Central Coast Roosters, Newcastle and Maitland Region Knights, Illawarra South Coast Dragons, Macarthur Wests Tigers and the Western Rams.
The teams have been split into two pools of five with the opening round scheduled for Saturday 26 February at Jack Woolaston Oval.
The Northern Tigers v Newcastle Maitland Region Knights will have the honour of kicking off the men’s competition at 1pm followed by the Women’s teams at 2.40pm.
The competition will run for two rounds before two weeks of finals which will be determined by the top four teams from either group (based on competition points and for and against). The top four will progress through to the semi-finals before the Grand Final on Sunday 27 March at a venue yet to be announced.
“The Men’s and Women’s Country Championships offers players from Regional NSW an important pathway to continue growing their skills and increase their success in our game,” NSWRL Head of Football Robert Lowrie said.
“We are proud of what the competition has achieved since it started, allowing players to compete at a higher level and remain playing the sport they love.
“I am looking forward to seeing the talent that the competition brings when we kick-off this weekend.”
Last year Monaro Colts, led by True Blue Terry Campese, took the honours in the Men’s Country Championships after holding on for an 18-16 win against Illawarra South Coast Dragons while Newcastle Maitland Region Knights scored a resounding 38-0 over Riverina Bulls in the women’s competition.
