History was made in Leeton on Sunday with the Galloping Greens proving that Leeton’s No 1 Oval is their fortress of solitude.

In an incredible effort, the Greens had all five teams contest the Group 20 senior Qualifying Semi-finals.

Remarkably, the Greens won all five games, making it a finals clean sweep as their Under 16s, Under 18s, League Tag, reserve grade and first grade teams progressed to the Group 20 Qualifying Finals, which are scheduled to be played in Darlington Point on Sunday.

In first grade, the Greens defeated a very tenacious Griffith Black and Whites 36-30, while in League Tag, Leeton were too good for West Wyalong, winning 36-6.

In lower grades, reserve grade beat Darlington Point-Coleambally 40-8, the Under 18s defeated Yenda 20-12, and the Under 16s knocked off Yenda 16-12.

Leeton Galloping Greens President, Col Fisher was proud of his club for the extraordinary feat.

“It was a very good effort,” he said.

“We have a lot of young and very talented players in the Under 16s and 18s, but we are a bit short numbers wise, so to get these results is great.”

In a huge weekend for Leeton and the Greens, the Group 20 junior Rugby League Semi-finals were also held in Leeton on Saturday.

Fisher said the two days could not have played out any better.

“It was a great weekend – weather wise and football wise,” he said.

“We even had (NSWRL Zone Manager) David Skinner there and he was really impressed with the quality of the games and how things were run.

“He came up to us and said it was great day, and you can’t ask for much more than that.”

Leeton’s senior sides venture to Darlington Point on Sunday to contest the Qualifying finals. Fisher hopes the Green’s good form continues as they plot a path to Group 20 glory.

“Overall, we have some handy sides there and it wouldn’t be a surprise if they go all the way,” he said.

“It certainly is an exciting day to be going to Darlington Point with five teams, and it probably hasn’t happened before, and it will be great if we can get them all through to their Grand Finals.

“It will be a harder task this week, because we are playing against the top sides, but we are there to play and we are a chance, and I am really looking forward to the day.”

Group 20 will see two action-packed days of Rugby League this weekend, with elimination finals to be held in Griffith on Saturday and Qualifying Finals to be played in Darlington Point on Sunday.

In Group 9, Elimination Finals will be played in Temora on Saturday and Qualifying Finals will be held in Gundagai on Sunday.
