True Blue Glenn Lazarus will become the 13th Canberra Raiders player to be inducted into the ACT Sports Hall of Fame.
The ceremony on Friday 25 November at the National Arboretum in Canberra recognises the contribution Lazarus made to the Territory’s history through his club, state and international career.
Lazarus played 21 State of Origins for NSW and 23 Tests for Australia alongside 257 first grade games, which included five premierships with three different clubs – the Raiders (1989, 1990) Brisbane Broncos (1992, 1993) and Melbourne Storm (1999).
He was inducted into the NRL Hall of Fame in 2008 and into the NSWRL Hall of Fame in 2021.
Now with the 56-year-old entering the ACT Hall of Fame he joins True Blues and former Canberra teammates Bradley Clyde, Laurie Daley and Ricky Stuart.
A Queanbeyan local, Lazarus rated the 1989 premiership with the Raiders in the 19-14 win over Balmain as the most memorable of the five rings he won.
“The Canberra one, to bring that trophy back to Canberra and to see the way Canberrans reacted to it, the celebrations that went on for over a week it was just wonderful,” Lazarus told The Canberra Times.
“I think a large part of that was there were a lot of local kids in that team.
“I’m so proud I was able to play for Australia and NSW, but winning grand finals is what it’s all about and ‘89 was very special for me personally, the boys, the team, the club and of course Canberra itself.”
For NSW, Lazarus played in nine series, winning five of them – 1990, 1992, 1993, 1994 and the 3-0 clean sweep in 1996.
