Siua Wong is the latest rising star making an impact in the Roosters’ lower grades, and following his strong 2022 season, a first grade appearance might not be too far away.
Having made his way from the first XV at Sydney’s Scots College to the Tricolours’ junior representative system in 2021 - following a similar path to current back-rower and True Blue Angus Crichton - Wong hasn’t taken long to make his presence felt on a Rugby League field.
He played seven games and scored four tries in his first season of the SG Ball Cup, before becoming captain of his Under 19s team and leading them to a Grand Final at CommBank Stadium in 2022.
Earlier that season, the young second-rower even made an appearance – and scored a four-pointer – in the NRL trial match between the Roosters and Canberra Raiders.
The 19-year-old proved himself more than enough during his second SG Ball Cup stint to join the North Sydney Bears in The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup, and he ended up being a valuable inclusion on the edge for coach Jason Taylor’s side.
Wong started 10 NSW Cup games from Round 16 onwards and, remarkably, played 80 minutes in all of them. He finished the year with three tries, a try assist, two line-breaks, 29 tackle busts and five offloads, averaging 113 run metres and 28.9 tackles.
His year of milestones continued when he was named in the Fiji Bati World Cup squad where he played every minute of their four-game campaign, including two wins and a thrilling Quarter-final battle against New Zealand.
If his 2022 season is any indication, then Wong could be on the cusp of taking the next step in his fledgling Rugby League career.
