Scorpions ready to put some sting into Outback Rugby League

The Silver City Scorpions are the only Rugby League club in Broken Hill and they'll be out to do their community proud, when the Outback Rugby League (ORL) finals kick off in Menindee on Saturday.

Playing at Burke and Wills Park, the third-placed Scorpions take on the second-placed Menindee Yabbies.

There's a lot at stake with the winner progressing to the ORL Grand Final, where they will face the Wilcannia Boomerangs at Broken Hill's Memorial Oval on Saturday 5 August.

"We are taking a positive approach to the finals and our game against Menindee," Silver City coach Rossi Morris said.

"There is a lot of pride here and we're committed to Rugby League since we started as an incorporated club in 2020.

"Every year we have played, we have played with that pride and love for the game and played for the community and our families.

"Win, lose or draw on Saturday, we'll have tried our best and we'll continue to be committed to the sport and try and help keep Rugby League alive."

The Scorpions (pictured above) and Yabbies have met three times during the 2023 season, with the ledger in Menindee's favour after a 40-12 win in Round Two and 28-16 win in Round Eight.

Silver City split those losses with a 24-16 win over the Yabbies in Round Five, and Morris believes the Scorpions can topple Menindee.

"We've come away with a win against them and we only had 14 players that day, with a few players out because of shift work," Morris said.

"Unfortunately, that wasn't the case on the weekend just passed, and they beat us. But we know we've found some weaknesses in the Yabbies defence.”

The ORL women's tackle Semi-Final will also be played on Saturday, with Silver City's women tackling the Wilcannia Wildflowers.

It has turned out to be only a two-team ORL women’s competition this year - their semi will be a preview to next week's Grand Final.

The action on Saturday starts with the women at 11am before the men's Semi-Final at 12pm.
