The final round of The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup has gone down to the very last game of the regular season, with Canberra Raiders only securing their spot after toppling Minor Premiers North Sydney Bears 36-14 at North Sydney Oval today.
The result propelled the Raiders into fourth position and cost the Newtown Jets a finals spot. The Jets had momentarily moved into fifth position after scoring a comprehensive 48-10 win over Newcastle Knights on Saturday, but slipped back to sixth after Canberra won.
The Bears had already secured the Minor Premiership but have now lost their past two games heading into the finals. South Sydney Rabbitohs secured second spot with a bye, the Warriors took out third with a 42-14 win over St George Illawarra Dragons, while Blacktown Workers Sea Eagles claimed fifth after downing last year’s Grand Finalists Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs 32-22.
Premiers Penrith Panthers also missed out on an opportunity to defend their title after losing to arch-rivals Parramatta Eels 34-24 on Saturday.
The Grand Finals were decided this weekend for other NSWRL Major competitions including the Leagues Clubs Australia Ron Massey Cup and Sydney Shield, with St Marys to be represented in both deciders at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium on Sunday 3 September.
St Marys rebounded in strong fashion against the Glebe Dirty Reds 52-0 to set up a showdown with Wentworthville Magpies in the Leagues Clubs Australia Ron Massey Cup; while Hills Bulls scored a thrilling 22-18 win over Penrith Brothers to book their place against St Marys in the Sydney Shield.
