Following in the footsteps of fellow Sydney Roosters back-rower Siua Wong, Max McCathie is the latest pathways player to be making a name for himself with the tricolours.
Being a part of the Roosters’ Junior Representative system since 2022, McCathie has become a mainstay at Bondi.
McCathie was part of the Roosters’ successful UNE SG Ball Cup squad in 2022, playing nine games including the Grand Final against the Penrith Panthers at CommBank Stadium.
In 2023, the talented back-rower was named captain for the Jersey Flegg Cup team and played a pivotal role in helping his team to claiming the Minor Premiership.
He made 22 appearances with four tries, four try assists, eight line-breaks, five line-break assists, 64 tackle-busts and 16 offloads, averaging 113 run metres.
Following a breakout season, McCathie was awarded NSWRL Jersey Flegg Cup Player of the Year as well as the Arthur Beetson Medal for the Roosters’ Jersey Flegg Player of the Year.
Coming through the Junior Representative system with teammates Cassius Tia, Xavier Chatfield-Mooka and Salesi Foketi, has seen a strong combination form at the tricolours, which could become a force to be reckoned with.
In the last two years both the SG Ball and Jersey Flegg Roosters teams, which featured these four players, have secured the Minor Premiership and made the Grand Final.
With a bright future ahead for the young back-rower, a Knock-On Effect NSW Cup debut wouldn’t be far off in 2024.
