The Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks has today announced that Westpac Sky Blues speedster Emma Tonegato will remain at the club until at least the end of the 2026 season.
Since debuting in 2022, Tonegato has made 22 NRLW appearances – featuring in all nine matches of the Sharks inaugural season in 2023.
Making the switch from fullback to five-eight last season, Tonegato had a strong season scoring three tries, 24 tackle breaks, six-line assists and making 133 tackles.
The 28-year-old has represented the Sky Blues three times since making her debut at fullback in 2022, when NSW won the Origin Shield.
Tonegato was named NSWRL’s Women’s Origin Player of the Year in 2023 after making 13 tackle breaks in two games, a try assist and averaging 177 metres.
With a list of achievements including winning the 2021 Dally M Medal, a 2016 Olympic gold medal in Rugby Sevens along with a Jillaroos World Cup win in 2022 to her name, Tonegato is one of the most decorated players currently in the NRLW.
Signing her first long-term deal, Tonegato believes the future is looking bright for not only herself but for future players.
“It’s been great to debut for the Sharks and the first season was really special to me. I’m excited to continue that legacy,” Tonegato told sharks.com.au.
“Being a female in sport, we’ve always had such short-term contracts. It’s the first time that I’ve locked in my future for a few years, and I know where I’m going to be.
“Off field, that allows me to plan, know where I’m going to live and know what my incomes going to be. It is the first time I’ve ever been in that position.
“It’s really nice and I’m hoping that will translate to a stress-free on-field performance.”
