The NSWRL is deeply saddened at the passing today of True Blue and Balmain Tigers great Keith Barnes.
Barnes, renowned for his goalkicking prowess, was a member of the NRL Hall of Fame and a former Kangaroos captain (and captain-coach), as well as playing an integral role with Balmain where he played 194 premiership matches (1955-1968).
NSWRL Chief Executive David Trodden said: “Keith was a giant of the game and possibly the greatest Tiger of them all.
“More than all of that, he carried himself with grace and dignity and personified what it is to be a gentleman. He will be sorely missed.”
Born in Wales, Barnes joined the Tigers from Wollongong and quickly established himself as a goalkicker, fullback and leader, earning himself the nickname “Golden Boots”, scoring a club record 1519 career points.
He played 12 games for NSW (1956-63), kicking 54 goals, and booted the same number of goals for the Kangaroos from 17 Tests.
He made his international debut in Australia’s 1957 World Cup victory before leading the Kangaroos as captain from 1959-60, and later as captain-coach in the 1960 World Cup.
The NSWRL extends its deepest sympathy to Keith’s family, friends and all those who knew him.
