Happy National Volunteer Week

The NSWRL has joined sporting organisations across the country to celebrate and say “three cheers for volunteers” as part of the annual National Volunteer Week campaign, acknowledging almost 30,000 people who have already registered for the 2024 Community Rugby League season.

Already 29,469 people have registered as volunteers, coaches or trainers in 2024 to help run the game at more than 700 Rugby League clubs across the state compared with 27,026 at the corresponding time in 2023.

NSWRL Chief Executive David Trodden said that with the organisation’s recent announcement of record numbers of almost 113,000 registered participants playing Rugby League in NSW this year, the contribution and role of volunteers cannot be overstated.

“In line with this week’s 2024 National Volunteer Week messaging, ‘something for everyone’, it is important that we continue to acknowledge the many diverse roles and ways our volunteers contribute to the game – from our community club secretaries, presidents, coaches, and referees to the countless selfless people setting up the grounds and running the canteens and club barbecues.

“Certainly our game would not exist without the incredible commitment and dedication of all of our volunteers, who play an important role in so many ways to ensure that our participants have an enjoyable Rugby League experience.

“I encourage everyone to take a moment this week to say ‘three cheers’ to all of our volunteers and celebrate the role they play in making a difference in our clubs and their communities.”

National Volunteer Week (20-26 May) is Australia’s largest annual celebration of people giving their time freely, recognising the vital support that millions of Australians provide to their communities and encourages others to consider volunteering.

The NSWRL also acknowledges and rewards the valuable contribution of our grassroots clubs and volunteers through a range of awards across all facets of the game through the prestigious annual NSWRL Community Awards, with nominations now open for the 2024 season.

The awards also acknowledge the support given by our clubs and volunteers in the wider community as well as to the Rugby League family for roles including canteen support, team management, secretaries, presidents, coaches, referees, and those devoted to inclusive and Indigenous involvement in the game.
