Even before a group of former NRL players and other supporters tie up their shoelaces to walk for three days in support of the ‘Beanies for Brain Cancer’ round, they have already kicked a goal.
The aim for the three-day walk (14-16 June) from Allianz Stadium to McDonald Jones Stadium to once again raise funds and awareness for the Mark Hughes Foundation (MHF), was to hit $150,000.
“This year we’re already up to $164,000 but we won’t be stopping there,” said walk organiser, Luke Alexander.
"We’ve raised $725,000 for this very worthy cause but unfortunately every year more and more people are affected by brain cancer or have a story about it so we’ll keep walking.”
It is the fourth year the ‘Big Three Trek’ has been held, where walkers cover the 150km distance in three days.
The 50-strong walking group will arrive in time for the 4.05pm kick-off in the Newcastle Knights v Penrith Panthers Round 15 game on Sunday afternoon.
Former players Bill Peden, Adam Muir, Joseph Paulo, Keegan Hipgrave, Michael Gordon, Mitch Rein, Akuila Uate, Rod Silva, Tom Symonds, Jamie Buhrer and Joe Galuvao are some of the trekkers this year.
“The NRL community, as everyone knows, is very special and the fact so many former players jump on board each year,” Alexander said.
“The Mark Hughes Foundation has been magnificent in driving all this because we intend to help find a cure for brain cancer down the track.”
