True Blue Nakia Davis-Welsh scored a double in the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks 24-18 win over Wests Tigers last weekend as NSWRL’s eilte women’s competition – the Harvey Norman NSW Premiership – began its 2024 season.
The mother of two is a former Jillaroo as well as a Sky Blue (2016-2018) enjoying her second year with the Sharks after taking a break from the game to have her family.
The Sharks were among the six winning clubs in Round One.
Grand finalists from 2023 - Mounties and Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs - each enjoyed wins to kick-off their 2024 campaigns in the 12-team competition.
But sitting on top of the Harvey Norman ladder is Wentworthville Magpies, who were able to keep St George scoreless in a 36-0 victory spearheaded by centre Belinda Gwasamun (above Photo: Bryden Sharp) scoring in both halves.
The Bulldogs, South Sydney Rabbitohs, and Parramatta Eels round out the top-four.
Dual Kiwi Ferns and Cook Islands international Kiana Takairangi scored for her new club, the Rabbitohs, in their 22-10 win over the Central Coast Roosters after shifting from the Sharks.
Mounties are the reigning premiers but a low-scoring win (8-4) over the Illawarra Steelers has them in sixth place on the table, behind the fifth-placed Sharks.
Only the top-four will move into the Harvey Norman Premiership Semi-finals in September.
The competition is in a new time slot in 2024 to coincide with the NRLW, which begins on 25 July.
Ten of the Harvey Norman NSW Premiership clubs will act as the feeder teams for eight of the 10 NRLW clubs. The Brisbane Broncos and North Queensland Cowboys have arrangements with QRL clubs.
