The PCYC Nations of Origin will celebrate its 10th anniversary, when the Rugby League games kick off tomorrow with 47 teams and 600 players taking part in a round-robin tournament in western Sydney.
PCYC Nations of Origin is held over four days and is a multi-faceted sport, cultural, education and leadership program that culminates around NAIDOC week every year. NAIDOC week is held annually in July to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Other sports represented include football fives, basketball, netball and gymnastics with more than 1400 Indigenous and non-Indigenous teenagers representing their nation.
The Rugby League tournament for Under 16s will be played over two days at Whalan Reserve in Whalan starting tomorrow (Tuesday 16 July).
“The Nations of Origin tournament is more than just a sporting event; it's a celebration of cultural identity and a powerful platform for promoting reconciliation,” PCYC NSW CEO Ben Hobby said.
“As the competition follows the celebration of NAIDOC Week, it is especially significant as we honour the history, culture, and achievements of Indigenous peoples.
"This event fosters leadership and lasting friendships, leaving a legacy that honours the elders whose custodianship of the land and culture we respect and acknowledge.”
To be eligible to play participants must have 80 per cent school attendance and teams must be engaged with and endorsed by their local elders.
Teams must consist of a 70:30 ratio of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal young people with the competitions helping to build skills, character, leadership, as well as encouraging cultural respect and connections.
