Diesels continue late-season charge

The Junee Diesels have piled on the points for the second time in as many weeks defeating Wagga Brothers 52-10 in their Group 9 Round 14 match at McDonald’s Park last weekend.

In a result that all but hands Brothers the wooden spoon, Junee were up to the task from the opening whistle in their nine-tries-to-two victory.

Led by captain-coach Daniel Foley, who crossed for a try either side of half-time, Junee led 24-4 at the break before kicking clear for an easy win with Cade Price and Cooper Wright each crossing for doubles.

It’s been a good little period for Junee, who toppled reigning premiers Tumut 54-12 a week earlier at Laurie Daley Oval.

Scoring 11 tries in the one-sided fixture, Ratu Saurara and Connor McCauley crossed for two apiece as Junee continued a late-season surge.

While making the finals seems far-fetched for the Diesels, they have pride to play for in the final four rounds.

In Round 15 they can throw another spanner in the works, when hosting the fifth-placed Gundagai Tigers at Laurie Daley Oval.

Despite losing three consecutive games, Gundagai is still in a position to play finals, but they will have to contend with an in-form Junee side with nothing to lose.

In other Round 14 matches played over the weekend, a Jared McKinnon hat-trick helped Temora to a 28-22 victory over the Albury Thunder at Greenfield Park on Saturday.

Young maintained top spot on the ladder with a convincing 25-6 victory over the Gundagai Tigers at Anzac Park on Sunday.

Thomas Demio guided the Tricolours to their 11th win of the season while Jack Bush crossed for a double.

In the upset of the round, Tumut bounced back against the fourth-placed Southcity Bulls, winning 24-10 at Harris Park on Sunday.

Jacob Toppin continued his strong season for the Blues, with the playmaker scoring two tries as Tumut kept their slim hopes of playing finals alive.
