Canberra Raiders’ Owen Pattie is reaping the rewards since making the move from Queensland to the nation’s capital at age 20 just a couple of seasons ago.
The St Brendan’s College product had stints in both the UNE SG Ball Cup (Under 19s) – making the Semi-finals – and Jersey Flegg Cup (Under 21s).
But it was in 2024 when Pattie made his mark as one of the most promising No.9s coming through the NSWRL competitions.
In a season that began with 15 games for the Jersey Flegg Raiders and eventual Minor Premiers, Pattie earned a promotion to The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup side for 12 games both off the bench and starting.
During that time in Jersey Flegg Cup he came up with six tries, 14 try assists, seven line-breaks, 10 line-break assists and averaged 27.6 tackles.
Pattie’s impact in his debut season for the NSW Cup Raiders didn’t go unnoticed, producing three tries, five try assists, four line-break assists, 24 tackles on average and a competition-leading three 40/20s.
One of those 40/20s came within a handful of minutes of entering the field late in the second half in the Preliminary Final, where Canberra fell agonisingly short of the Newtown Jets (18-16).
His busy 2024 was rewarded with the Canberra hooker being named NSWRL Jersey Flegg Cup Player of the Year at the Brad Fittler Medal event in September, with NRL head coach Ricky Stuart in attendance.
In 2025 Pattie should get even more experience at NSW Cup level but also joins Stuart’s NRL squad as a development player, meaning an appearance in the top grade may not be too far away for the talented No.9.
